Multi-member file and SQL

I recommend this post by Aldo Succi from his blog “IBM i (AS/400) Fans Only” on the topic of Multimember Physical Files and SQL.

The concept of multi-member file is a purely DB2 AS/400 thing that does not exist in other databases and which generally leads to several problems in modernization projects that see the use of other languages and tools or porting of cross-platform applications.

I purposely said AS/400 because I guess a modern development on IBM i doesn’t involve the use of multi-member files.

However, as often happens, we can find ourselves dealing with multi-member files of old applications and having to access them via SQL, so here’s this tutorial by Aldo Succi that fits perfectly:
